Our Kids Program video from this past summer.

While the majority of us were in an intensive language class during July & Ramadan, our leaders and the interns took on the not so small feat to lead a kids program of over 65 kids.
Our wonderful Christy put this sweet video together to give you a glimpse of what went down.
It was a huge success and the kids had a blast aaaaand… the interns got totally worn out.

Thank you to all the interns for your help.
Hope you enjoy the video
🙂

16 Again!

Since March one of my goals has been to learn to drive a stick shift. I have not driven a car in a year because we have a stick and I don’t know how. Well, that and the fact that the drivers here are just a tad crazy and they frighten me to death!

This past week I decided enough was enough. I was so tired of waiting on Stevie to drive me somewhere or waiting on perverted taxi drivers. (Some of them are nice but some are also creepy) Anyways, I did it! AND I learned from Stevie! That is almost a bigger feat than the first. We are still happily married too!

Game changer. I have a new found freedom! I feel like I’m sixteen…the only thing missing is Christina or Jenny to jump in my passenger seat 🙂 (Shout out to my girls!)

Watch out! There is another crazy driver on our streets!

And…please continue to pray for our safety.

Compare and Contrast!

I have decided to start a new post series called “Compare and Contrast” where I will post things that may be surprisingly similar or surprisingly different between our old home and our new.

I thought of this while I was cleaning the yard after a hard rain. Although trash is always an issue here, you can imagine after a big rain what can happen.  Don’t worry, I won’t tell you about the trash that people left next to our house wall with maggots all up in it (oops, I just spilled the beans).

Anyways, to introduce this post let me just say that trash cans, trash bins, trash pickup containers of any sort are ever so hard to find.  For example, I have been to the airport no less than a dozen times and I still cannot tell you where even one trash bin/can/container is in the entire airport (btw, if anyone reveals to me this information I will pay you a dinar).  Trash bins in our neighborhood are especially scarce.  From what I have described to you already, you would imagine anytime you would come across a trash bin, it would be found to be filled to overflowing, right??  Thaaaaat’s what I would guess.  This post is a CONTRAST post.  And one huge contrast between old home and new home is best seen between these two pictures.  Both are taken between 8 feet of our home!!

This trash is right outside our front door. I clean it up regularly and it finds its way back!!

This trash bin is at the subway stop that is less than 8 feet from our house. Why throw trash in the bin when the street is always closer!!

Party! Party! Party!

You maybe have seen Kais in other posts. Stevie has become very good friends with his barber. They even frequent the hammam (bath house) together. It was our great pleasure to attend his engagement party this month! What a joy to share in his journey as they look forward to getting married.

33 and in his prime.

So, you saw his birthday haircut post but little did you know I threw quite the bash for Stevie this year. He LOVES people, right? So, what better gift than to invite all of his friends over for a bash. I think I pulled off the surprise pretty well thanks to a few of our friends! I didn’t get very many pictures but we had about 20 people here, mostly his local buds, to celebrate Stevie! This man is over the top crazy, incredible, loving and passionate. I’m so thankful for his life and the joy he brings me! Here’s to 33 more years of laughter and love, ninja!

The Big Event

One of the biggest adventures we had this month was a two day trip to the middle of the country for our friend’s cousins wedding. Apparently the RSVP system doesn’t work quite the same as in the states because you can invite pretty much anybody to a wedding.

So, we packed up and drove three hours away from the pretty beaches to arrive at our friend Haytham’s house. Their family was so hospitable. Giving us anything and everything we needed. The first night we attended the groom’s party. Stevie arrived first, came back and told me, “It looks like a scene from The Three Amigos”, so I was prepared when I rounded the cactus corner to see the party before me. The party did not start until 9 or 10, it was miraculous that our kids held it together as long as they did. Belly dancers, a horse show, loud music, dancing and food! It pretty much was the biggest party ever and it wasnt even the main event! At about 1am I finally went into a little room and lay down with the kids on the cots in front of a fan. Then about 2:30 we went back to Haytham’s house and all fell asleep cuddling in front of the fan again.

The next day we went for an adventure to the mountains with Haytham. I enjoyed the trip because we rode in our air conditioned car! The kids had fun too as we hiked around and had ice cream.

That night I was whisked away with Ella to get our pre-wedding henna and then to a dress shop to rent an evening gown. It cost about 15 dollars!

The wedding was a blast! We danced and danced with our new family and friends. And then about 1 we had to leave to make the trip back to our house. It was a long ride home but the kids slept until 11 the next day! Whew! I think we are still recovering from our trip.

It’s been a while… so here’s a backflip!

I usually wouldn’t post a short dumb video of me doing a back flip… buuuuuuut it’s been a long white since we have posted anything, I just went to my cliff jumping spot again with some local friends, we had a blast and so I thought some out there would get a kick out of this. So, before we go on to catch up on more posts, here is a little treat, perhaps!!

I truly can’t wait to take our friends and family who come visit to this spot.

A little BIG adventure

Because TFP is closed this month we wanted to do a few things to spruce it up before we reopen. One of those things that needed to be done was to re-order my mats for Jazzercise. In the states, I would just order them online and have them shipped, right?! Well…. all my Jazzer peeps….next time you lay down on your nice mat think of me!

On one of our very hot days, Cheryl and I decided to venture downtown by taxi to try and “order” the mats. The first step would be to go to the foam guy and pick out the foam that will go in your mats and then you go to the material store and pick out the material that can cover the foam and then you make your way to the seamstress to put the #$@% things together. Did I forget to mention that you carry the foam to the material guy and then the material AND the foam to the seamstress guy?

Oh, I’m getting a headache just thinking back on it. I’m glad Cheryl went with me or I would still be there crying on a curb somewhere trying to say the word “foam” in arabic 🙂

Its the little things that can sometimes be the biggest adventures!

A Month of Adventure…

August has been quite the month! The Family Place has been closed because of the end of Ramadan and then for Eid. So…we found ourselves getting into all sorts of adventures. Stay tuned over the next few days for the adventure posts!

We have been able to see a lot more of our country and let me tell you it is GORGEOUS! We visited several beaches with teammates and friends and thankfully Stevie is still alive after all of his cliff jumping.

Let me tempt you into coming to visit us…

Bday cut!!

What does a person do when it’s hotter than two mice a two dollar pistol, your going almost completely bald and its your birthday?? You go down the street to the best friend/barber in the world and tell him to cut it all off! Thx Kais for the straight edge total makeover. My head is now smoother than Max’s rear end.
